Earthquake in southern Iran — 5.5

Earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred on Wednesday in the southern part of Iran, the website of U.S. Geological Service (USGS).

The epicenter of tremors recorded in 06.22 local time (06.52 MSK), located at 51 km north of Lahr (Fars province). The earthquake lies at a depth of 40.3 kilometers. No casualties or damage were reported.

Iran is among the ten most earthquake-prone regions of the world, there is almost every ten years an earthquake with magnitude greater than 7.0. 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the city of Bam in December 2003 caused the deaths of more than 31 thousand people, about 42 thousand injured. The ancient city of Bam, and the famous fortress was destroyed almost completely.
