Missile Defense Agency and the crew of the cruiser USS Lake Erie February 13 conducted successful flight test of a missile defense system to intercept AEGIS BR average range over the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Defense Department reports. Purpose intercepted antimissile Standard Missile-3 Block IA.
BR was launched from the Pacific Missile range in Kauai (Hawaii). The rocket was found and was accompanied by a satellite system STSS-D (Space Tracking and Surveillance System-Demonstrators). Ship kitted defense system of the second generation, successfully destroyed the target. Antimissile maneuvered and hit BR kinetic warhead direct hit.
It was the 24th successful intercept of 30 starts, held on programmke AEGIS (tests were conducted in 2002). Total 2001 U.S. missile defense system performed 73 launch missiles of various types, 58 of them were successful.
AEGIS system affects BR medium and short range as with multiple warheads and unitary midcourse flight using the SM-3 missiles. For the destruction of short-range BR on final line of motion used missiles SM-2 Block IV.
