Extensive landslides occurred in the northeast of the Colombian province of Norte de Santader. The landslide was the result of heavy rains that contributed to the descent of an avalanche near the settlement Teorama. According to preliminary data, the debris may be about 20 — 30 residents of the settlement. Another 50 people in one way or another affected by the sudden shift of the earth formation.
As visibility is reduced in the region due to the ongoing rains, ground rescue operations are temporarily unable to continue. In the area of natural disasters can only be reached by air. Descending from the mountain, a landslide demolished six houses and blocked the road segment, which at the moment is landing people on the bus. All of them were trapped in the earth. Among them, there were probably children.
Authorities warn that the soil in many areas the province is still loose, and heavy rains continue to soften it, so new landslides can be expected at any time. If possible, the Colombians should not use the road, located in potentially hazardous areas.
Earlier this week, a similar landslide occurred in the western city of Ansermet, it killed 4 people. For the current year in Colombia from this type of natural disaster killed 74 people and affected 812,997 people in 27 provinces in the country (there are 31). This type of accident can be called a mass for the country, because of the mountainous terrain, the presence of intense earthquakes and prolonged rainfall, combined with rapid and sometimes ill-planned development of infrastructure, disrupting the natural balance. Compared to other South American countries, Colombia landslides occur more often than usual.
