The heat in Russia will lead to a demographic hole in passerine birds in spring

The heat in the Russian regions will result in death, "young" sparrow from overheating this summer, next spring the birds will be less, but their numbers will quickly recover naturally, told RIA Novosti Associate Professor of Zoology and Ecology of Moscow State Pedagogical University (Moscow State Pedagogical University) Alex Mosalov.

In late July in most parts of Siberia for sustainable anticyclone established hot weather (up to 34 degrees Celsius), which is expected to weather forecasters, will continue in August.

"Juveniles" passerine birds — one or two broods that hatched this summer — will suffer quite a serious loss. The next year, we can predict a decline, a "demographic pit", which will be noticeable in the spring, "- said Mosalov.

For passerines than house sparrow are tits, nightingales, wagtails, starlings, larks, skates and some other birds.

According Mosalova, hot weather will affect the number of birds because it "began at the very moment when the first nest sparrow chicks have already embarked on the wing, and the chicks just hatched from the second."

Frigostable hard in the heat

Mosalov explained that the birds in hot weather (above 30 degrees) can die from overheating, as they are extremely intense metabolism and not too effective cooling system of the body. If overheating birds bred in the wing, tail lift and open beak, other ways to cool down a sparrow does not exist, so if the temperature continues to rise, it will quickly lead to the death of birds.

According to the scientist, the birds of Siberia and central Russia initially adapted to the average temperatures, and more resistant to cold than to heat. Therefore, it's not the absolute temperature, and its deviation from the usual norm, and if the temperature is well above the average, it can be fatal to birds. In the city of heat transfer birds difficult due to thermal radiation from the hot asphalt.

Particularly susceptible to extreme temperatures, young birds that are less suited to temperature than adults, yet "hardened", said the expert.

Spring will be quiet

Mosalov noted that in areas where the weather is hot now, spring bird singing may not be as loud as passerine birds fly less. However, it will continue for a very short time — a week or two, because "nature abhors a vacuum," and fill out a demographic shortage poultry from neighboring territories.

"There is always a so-called reserve population — a group of birds, which for various reasons have not started to breed — for example, failed to create a pair, find a place to nest or secure their territory. They quickly catch up with their neighboring regions where the density of nesting will be small "- said Mosalov.

In addition, as the expert explained, acted, and other mechanisms to compensate for reduction in the number of birds.

"The passerine birds in the summer is very intensive breeding, and as soon as weather conditions are favorable, they successfully leave offspring — can delay and two and three clutches in the summer, thus freely covering demographic shortfall last year. If such weather disasters occur within few months, and do not last for several years, nature quickly eliminates all ", — he added.
