Ukraine is not likely to agree to the request to fill in Belarus Venezuelan oil pipeline "Odessa-Brody".
Kiev energy expert Michael Potter the BBC said that the Ukrainian government will not make it to the transit of oil through the pipeline in Belarus aggravate relations with Russia:
"I strongly doubt it. Unfortunately, because in essence, we understand that buying Venezuelan oil causes a negative reaction in Russia, which sees this as the fact that Belarus is released from the lever depending on the Russian side. And so, when Ukraine in this context will Belarusian side, then automatically it is exposed to certain problems with Russia. And the current government in Ukraine I think, not ready to go out to aggravate relations with Russia. It seems to me, it's one of the reasons why so Belarusians actively working now with the Baltic ports. "
Michael Potter recalled that the option of oil supplies to Belarus needs with Ukrainian oil transportation system and that the pipeline "Odessa-Brody" was handled by request of the Belarusian side in 1995.
Now the pipeline "Odessa-Brody" works in the reverse direction to pump Russian oil. Belarus hopes by 2012 to increase the supply of oil from Venezuela to 10 million tons and to engage with the Ukrainian transit pipeline "Odessa-Brody".
