Earthquake of magnitude 6.5 occurred on Tuesday in the central part of Chile near the capital Santiago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at 42 kilometers north of the city of Valparaiso and 122 km from the capital of Santiago. The earthquake lies at a depth of 67 kilometers.
The threat of a tsunami from the earthquake was not announced.
Earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above are considered strong and can lead to the destruction of infrastructure and loss of life.
Chile is characterized by high seismic activity. At the end of February 2010 in the South American country in the 8.8-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami killed more than 500 people.
