In 2012, Earth Hour is celebrated on March 31

Every year millions of people around the world in the last Saturday of March mark Earth Hour. In 2012, Earth Hour will take place on 31 March, 20.30 to 21.30 local time. WWF encourages residents and business owners around the world turn off lights and appliances insignificant for one hour. The aim is to raise awareness of the observed climate changes in the world and encourage them to take responsibility for a stable future.

On this day many symbolic places and sights in Europe, Asia and America plunged into darkness for an hour. Some people prefer to spend Earth Hour at dinner or in the bathroom with candles and other arrange-hour party in the dark.

It all began in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses throughout Sydney's lights went out. After that, more than a hundred million a tysachah cities over 80 countries have been actively involved in the event. Some of the places depicted in the photographs of previous years:

In 2012, Earth Hour is accompanied by the slogan "I will work with you". As part of this campaign, Sydney Opera House during the month of paper used the minimum of resources, and on 30 March plans to completely paperless. A producer and developer of recipes Jerry James Stone promised to become a vegetarian for a month, if the fans at least a week to give up meat. In India, there is a contest of the best cities in the conduct of Earth Hour. What is the effectiveness of Earth Hour? A few facts:

  1. In 2011 in Toronto by Toronto Hydro for an hour was reduced electricity consumption by 296 megawatts, or 10% of the RDA.
  2. The Indian city of Bangalore in 2011, thanks to the efforts of hotels and shopping centers energy consumption dropped by 60 megawatts.
  3. According to official data released by the World Wildlife Fund in 2008, in Jakarta daily amount of electricity consumption has been reduced by 170 megawatts, in Vietnam — to 400,000 kilowatts, saving 23,000 Vietnamese dong, Dubai — by 204,000 kilowatts.
