In the north-east of India was a strong earthquake

In the Indian state of Sikkim in the north-east of the country, an earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude. Much affected, at least nine people were killed.

After the first quake was followed by new tremors comparable power — up to 6 magnitudes. According to preliminary data, resulting in up to 12 buildings collapsed in the state capital — the city Gangtok.

NEW DELHI, Sept. 18 — RIA Novosti. The death toll in Sunday in India and Nepal through tremors, with the epicenter in the north-east of India, has grown to 18 people, according to CNN-IBN television channel with reference to local authorities.

We have previously reported 11 people were killed and over 100 injured.

As reported by the media official sources, seven people were killed in the Indian state of Sikkim, two people were killed in Bihar, four — in the state of West Bengal. In neighboring Nepal, which has also been affected by the elements, killing five people.

The government sends in Sikkim five military transport aircraft with cargo for the affected regions. Except for humanitarian goods on board the aircraft are sent to the disaster zone by rescuers.

The earthquake, which was magnitude 6.8, occurred on Sunday at 18.10 local time (16.40 MSK). According to the Meteorological Service of India, the epicenter of the quake was located 68 kilometers north-east of the administrative capital city of Sikkim Gangtok. Tremors lasted about 30 seconds, followed by two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 6.1 and 5.3.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called on Sunday evening an emergency meeting on the situation in the disaster area, the news agency IANS.

According to RIA Novosti, the tremors were felt in the capital, New Delhi, where many people came out of their homes as well for fear of aftershocks.

The earthquake was felt in much of the north and north-east India, local media say. Tremors were reported in major cities of India like Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Jaipur, Guwahati and others.
