Ivan the Terrible volcano awoke the Kuril Island of Iturup

Members of the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics recorded awakening volcano Ivan the Terrible in the Kuril island of Iturup, threats settlements there, told RIA Novosti the EMERCOM Russia's Sakhalin region.

"The eruption began on Wednesday. On the northeast flank of the volcano has increased the intensity of the emission of gas. Nearest town, away from the volcano at 9 km. Scientists explain the eruption of a substantial amount of water in the feed channels. Thursday night in settlements Iturup felt faint odor hydrogen sulfide, and there were minor loss of ashes "- said the source.

These eruptions occurred in 1968, 1973 and 1989 and do not infringe upon life of the borough. Currently, the smell in the settlements there, falling ash is not registered.
