The German command decided to include units Latvian volunteers in the Waffen SS in 1943, after the defeat at Stalingrad. Here then was formed Latvian voluntary housing SS in the 15th and 19th Grenadier Division. The case was due, at least partially make up for the shortage of manpower in the Army Group "North".
Latvian voluntary housing took part in punitive operations against the Russian partisans in the Pskov region in 1943. In March 1944, the Latvian volunteers resisted the offensive of the Red Army near Leningrad. March 16 is celebrated as the day of the first collision Latvian SS volunteer corps with Russian troops.
19th Waffen Grenadier division SS was destroyed in April 1945, the 15th division surrendered in May, once in the environment.
