A magnetic storm caused the northern lights in the Baltics and USA

Tuesday Night on Earth a moderate magnetic storm. According to the Center of space weather forecast of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the USA (NOAA), Kp index of geomagnetic disturbances at present is 6 units, according to RIA Novosti.

Storm began at 22:00 MSK on Monday and was recorded by a network of ground magnetic stations in the U.S., Canada and the UK. At 01:00 on Tuesday, the index rose to 7, and then decreased to 6 units.

Disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere — the magnetic storms — occur under the action of solar plasma of charged particles ejected Sun. As a result of storms in Earth orbit satellites can be exposed to the incoming flow of plasma, and in the high latitudes of the Northern Lights occur. The reason for the current magnetic storm is in the release of solar plasma on October 22. In the evening of that day, scientists have recorded growth of the proton flux from the Sun, and last night on Earth began magnetic disturbances.

Reported aurora in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Canada, New York, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana, Maryland, and Ohio. Observers in Norway called Sunshine "one of the most powerful in a long time." In Estonia, the northern lights were reported in the vicinity of Tartu.

Scientists believe that magnetic storm will not last more than a day.
