Air traffic in southern Brazil interrupted by Chilean volcano

Brazilian airlines suspended flights in the southern U.S. states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina because of the risk of hitting aircraft in a cloud of ash from the eruption of the Chilean volcano.

Volcanic eruption Puyeue 800 kilometers south of the capital city of Santiago Chile in Chilean side of the Andes occurred last Saturday.

According to the Brazilian Air Force, the cloud is a serious threat to aircraft, reached the country on Wednesday, and is currently on the Brazilian territory at an altitude of 1500 meters. It is expected that in the coming hours ash can cover the first major city in Brazil — Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul.

Leading Brazilian airline TAM and GOL announced Thursday the cancellation in the two southern states of the country as well as in neighboring Argentina and Uruguay. A further decision will be taken on Friday morning local time, depending on the situation, with the movement of volcanic ash.
