An earthquake with magnitude 5.6 occurred near the Nicobar Islands

Earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred in the Indian Ocean near the Nicobar islands, said on Friday the U.S. Geological Survey website.

According to the service, the tremors have been recorded in 12.27 local time (11.27 MSK).

The epicenter was located 206 kilometers south of the city of Port Blair, bred in the archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The hearth was located at a depth of 35 kilometers.

The threat of a tsunami, the destruction and casualties were reported.

Nikobraskie Islands — a group of islands in the Bay of Bengal, belonging to the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

On the islands there are tens of thousands of natives. About a quarter of the population died in the tsunami caused by an earthquake in 2004.
