Four people died in an earthquake in northern Indonesia — Media

Victims of a strong earthquake that occurred over the weekend in the northern part of Indonesia, have at least four people, said on Monday the news portal Detik.com.

According to the portal, the magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter scale, used in Indonesia reached 6.2.

"Officially recorded the earthquake at this point are as follows: Four people were killed and seven others were seriously injured, 51 seriously damaged the structure," — said the head of the National Information Center of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (NUMKG) Indonesia Purva Sutopo Nugroho (Sutopo Purwo Nugroho).

He said that the death toll could rise as quake caused more than a dozen landslides have violated transport and communication with the three subareas of the most affected provinces.

As RIA Novosti on NUMKG, quake epicenter was located in the mountains of the central part of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, 27 kilometers south-west of the administrative district of Parigi-Mutong (Central Sulawesi province). Its center was located just ten kilometers from the surface.

In 2009, the victims of a series of powerful earthquakes in the province of West Sumatra were more than one thousand people, and in 2004, off the west coast of Sumatra was the strongest in the world over the last 40 years an earthquake. Consequent tsunami claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in 12 countries of the Indian Ocean.
