The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.8, and the epicenter was located in the south in the state of Guerrero.
"I felt it was good, my lamp was swinging, the table shook, too," — said Alexander Kadavid, who lives in an apartment in Mexico City.
Circling over the city a few helicopters, studying the damage, according to eyewitnesses.
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said that public transport is working properly and that there are no signs that the city has serious problems.
"Based on data from surveillance cameras, surveillance data from helicopters and patrols, we have no reports of damage," — wrote the mayor in his microblog on Twitter.
