NATO and the EU refused to recognize the legitimacy of the elections in Abkhazia

Representatives of the Union and the Euro NATO stated that these organizations do not recognize the legitimacy of the presidential elections in Abkhazia, held on 26 August. It is reported by Agence France-Presse.

EU High Representative for foreign policy and security chief Catherine Ashton and Secretary General NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen was reminded of what their organization stands for the territorial integrity of Georgia, as required by the rules of international law.

"The European Alliance does not see any legal or constitutional grounds for similar elections," — said Ashton. "The holding of these elections does not contribute to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Georgia," — said, namely, Rasmussen said.

The elections in Abkhazia Alexander won Ankvab, collected 54.9 percent of the vote. In total, 58 voted for Ankvaba 657 thousand people. Ankvab replaced as president by Sergei Bagapsh, died May 29, 2011. Because of the destruction Bagapsh in the country have been designated preterm presidential election.

Our homeland has recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with the results of an armed conflict with Georgia in August 2008. Acts of the Russian Federation has supported a number of countries, including Belarus, Armenia, Cuba, China and Iran. With all of this, most countries of the world do not consider Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.
