Peru will fight against drug trafficking and terrorists with Russian helicopters, the country's Defense Ministry has decided to purchase from Russia 24 Mi-171 for a total of 406.8 million dollars, said the Peruvian newspaper La Republica.
The newspaper said the country's Defense Ministry has already submitted to the Ministry of Economy of the relevant draft decision prepared on the basis of a comparative analysis of Russian helicopters helicopters AS-332-C1 Super Puma AS 532 Cougar and manufactured by Eurocopter. Peruvian Defense Ministry plans to use these helicopters in the valleys of the rivers Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro, in the provinces of Junin, Yauli, Jauja, Concepción and Huancayo, reports
Russian proposal was made in the negotiations of the governmental delegation of the Russian Federation and representatives of the Peruvian Ministry of Defense, which took place in Lima in early March. The cost of one helicopter will exceed 16.9 million dollars. According to the plan of supply, 21 helicopters will be delivered to Peru in 2014, three helicopters — in 2015.
The newspaper notes that the Peruvian Ministry of Defense is also interested in supplying the country additional airborne weapons and equipment for the Russian-made helicopters. Russia, in turn, offered to host the training and instruction of pilots — both in Russia and in Peru. If these decisions are taken, the newspaper writes, the total transaction amount will increase to 485.5 million dollars.
The newspaper also notes that if the deal goes through, it will be the first in 30 years, when the Peruvian government buys aircraft directly from the manufacturer.
