Severe storm in Sri Lanka — 17 dead

Torrential rains and hurricane-force winds have killed at least 17 people in the southern part of Sri Lanka. The Center for Disaster Management reported that a total of 17 people were killed and another 33 are still missing. Officials said about 1,500 buildings were damaged. Monsoon rains are essential for irrigation and power generation, but the seasonal downpours frequently cause loss of life and damage to property. Source: Colombo
