So, what I was shooting them? This is not a military-patriotic project. Not propaganda intelligence agencies. On the contrary, I took off in spite of prohibitions, bureaucratic barriers, prejudice and resistance to various news services and centers to promote not know what and who … I call it a historical photographic project.

Both of my grandfathers fought wars. Stories about the majestic war against fascism, repeated many times — is of youth. There were also military and adventure novels Sabatini and Dumas, and severe war prose Stepanova and Pikul. "War and Peace" I read twice — the first time in the school, of course. Here then is the first time I saw a gallery of heroes of the war of 1812 in the Hermitage. Kutuzov, Miloradovich Uvarov, Bagration, Davydov, Shakhovskoy Ermoloff … This is the gallery of formal portraits in a special way encouraged me in the process.

I would love to have time to take them off for now. Until they are gone or until completely retreated into a shell blind unbelief and loneliness. I see the smile skeptics formal portrait? No, of course the same … My portraits are not ceremonial. In-1's, I took all the black-and-white film to achieve more dramatic, and then … after all Photos born black and white, is not it? In-2-all before the 1st shot in the genre of "low-key" and are faster to type of mental portrait. But the general is. And there are war heroes. But there, in the 1820s, these characters were not classified. Faster opposite — the government itself I wish that people knew their own saviors and heroes. I was shooting non-public people, who are used to avoid media attention. They occasionally feted as heroes of modern military history. But they are all true, nonfictional characters.

I started shooting in September 2008, and the last portrait made in August 2011. I love military history, learn it from books, military memoirs and documentaries. But no book, no picture will not change the luxury of communicating with the living part of the action. This true luxury — the chance to make a "journey in a time machine" — I gave the project. All that has been the secret to our new stories from 1979 to the present day, all that I do not have told a Russian school — that's what I vyznat of them veterans of the special units. They read as me. And already for that alone I am infinitely grateful to them.
