6.5 earthquake in eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, June 26 — RIA Novosti, Mikhail Tsyganov. A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the use in Indonesia Richter scale occurred on Sunday night in the east of Indonesia, told RIA Novosti in the National Department of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (NUMKG).

The epicenter of quake was located 53 kilometers north-east of Warren in West Papua province on the island of New Guinea.

Due to the deep location of the center — 132 kilometers below the surface of the Pacific Ocean — the possibility of a tsunami warning is declared, said Officer NUMKG.

Information on casualties or damage as yet available.

Indonesia is part of the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire" (powerful tectonic fault). Plate, forming the bottom of the Indian Ocean, "squeezes" here under the Asian plate, which is part of Sumatra, about as fast as the growing human fingernail.

Accumulating tension and then released as a giant earthquake forces.

In December 2004, what happened in the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the strongest in the world over the last 40 years, another earthquake caused a tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries.
