February 8, 2013. This winter we have heard in weather forecasts that approaching us another active cyclone, who is going to fill up all the snow and make roads and streets impassable drifts. Cyclones, intentionally flame us with snow, come from relatively warm and also the underlying surface water. These properties are characterized by the waters of the North Atlantic, thanks to the Gulf Stream, and the waters of the Mediterranean, generally located at subtropical latitudes. Therefore, people from those places have a huge stock of moisture, which, in fact, pouring first to Europe and then to the European territory of Russia.
Of course, in the process of passing a long way to European countries, these cyclones to some extent lose their water supplies, and a few out of steam on the way to our border. However, further development depends on how willing the local air masses to receive unwanted guests. In winter, they are really uninvited, as they are the cyclones come winter thaws, and with them only rainy and muddy weather, without any prospects for an early spring. We know that the cold weather will return, because in our latitudes, count on this warm early April is not necessary.
This winter happened more than once so that cyclones unceremoniously invaded our territory in the prime of life and energy. In addition, the European part of Russia, these Barik-circulation of Education received a second wind against the background of increasing temperature contrasts, as these huge eddies, occupying huge space to the north of the incoming cold arctic air, and from the south — tropical.
In such a scenario cyclones can regenerate and freely pursue their wet work already in our country. But sooner or later their excesses in the European part of Russia finished and they go away … As a rule the inhabitants of the Central Region of little interest to their future fate. And yet, we trace the further trajectory of the cyclone — where do find their final resting place, these North Atlantic and Mediterranean visitors?
In the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation is arranged in such a way that the cyclonic eddies in the general flow of air masses move from the south-west to north-east, that is rejected in the higher latitudes. In the winter, as a rule, cyclones, falling from the ocean to the land, gradually filled with homogeneous in their properties with air. And the temperature contrasts that make the cyclonic vortices exist, begin to disappear. As a consequence, the energy of cyclones is not long enough, they lose their strength and become extinct. Therefore, after passing over the European Russia were not given any recharge from the outside, they eventually end their way of life in the Arctic Urals — the Yamal and Taimyr. No accident that these two peninsulas called the "graveyard" of cyclones.
However, under certain circumstances, namely when a sharp temperature contrasts, about 10% of cyclones reborn to life and go on a long journey over the vast expanses of our country. It is the penetration of these vortices viable in Western Siberia related local weather variability. Sometimes it happens that the winter in that region thaw comes, despite the fact that the climate there is very severe.
Meanwhile, among the Atlantic cyclones have separate instances — the real champions — who reached the Far East, and even there, manage to leave marks. Of course, worked his way into thousands of kilometers long, marine air masses from the Atlantic are losing their original properties and transformed into a continental. Yet they reach the east coast of Eurasia, where, no doubt, the weather dictates the largest ocean of the planet by the name of the Pacific!
