Russia may lose all pig the plague

DUBAI, April 1 — RIA Novosti. Russia risks losing all the pig, if not in 2011, will begin implementation of the special measures for the eradication of African swine fever (ASF), said Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik meeting in Volgograd.

Since the beginning of 2011 in Russia there were eight outbreaks of the virus. In particular, the disease was found in the Stavropol and Krasnodar territories, Nizhny Novgorod, Leningrad, Rostov and Volgograd regions. In February this year, the Russian Federation adopted an action plan to prevent the spread and elimination of ASF, which provides for the transfer of all industrial pig farms in closed-type personal subsidiary farms who breed pigs, the regime bezvygulnogo content.

The minister said on Friday, in the industry today, there are two interrelated major problems: A package of measures for the eradication of ASF and reorientation of agricultural enterprises that specialized in pig production to other types of livestock, by ensuring that they have not lost their profitability.

"If this year we did not get down to these tasks, the outlook is negative — there is a chance of losing all pig" — said the Minister.

As noted by attending the meeting the chief veterinarian of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Vlasov, problems of this magnitude in the veterinary field for the last time were decided in the late 60's — early 70's, when the country was struggling with FMD.

Vlasov also confirmed the intention of the federal government approximately two weeks to introduce special restrictions of the South and the North Caucasus Federal District, unfavorable for the spread of ASF. It is assumed in the first place, to prohibit the exportation of the regions of pigs and pork products.

He stressed the need to "clean up" contaminated products from distribution networks in which it is actively circulating. The Chief Veterinary Officer also said that the 200-km depth zone of special operations will begin from the borders of the Voronezh, Saratov regions, and to move to the South for the South and North Caucasus Federal District.

The head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert stressed that regional leaders need to understand that they determine whether the RF to raise pigs or not.

Be rooted regional egoism, say representatives of the veterinary department.
