Specialized program for tsunami hazard calculations used by the National Agency for the atmosphere and the ocean the United States, can calculate the results of the simulation of such a wave and, therefore, to give a forecast of destruction just eight hours. The use of powerful clusters does not significantly speed up the process.
According to the source, the staff of the Novosibirsk State University were able to reduce the bulk of the necessary calculations 150 times, using graphics accelerators.
Lavrentyev explained that on the basis of the algorithm will continue to create ready-made applications and optimize them for a specific computer hardware, which today is used in tsunami warning centers. With these applications, software packages used today in these centers will work faster and more accurately.
In particular, according to Vice-Chancellor, if you take the scenario of the March earthquake in Japan, where the first wave came in the city of Sendai after 33 minutes after the quake, "That our sensor wave would come in 12-15 minutes". That is, according to him, the residents of the coastal zone in the center of most damage would be even 15-17 minutes to leave their homes and escape, while the population in remote areas of water — half an hour or more.
"We are ready to offer the developed technology for use in prevention. In addition, we have algorithms speed up warning systems and computing the initial configuration of the wave, allowing to identify in which coastal areas need urgent evacuation. In the near future, all these developments will be patented ", — Said Lavrentyev.
The work was done with the participation of undergraduate and graduate students of NSU in the federal target program for the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation "Scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel of innovative Russia" for 2009 — 2013 years. The total funding amounted to 10 million rubles for three years.
