In the burial of the tenth century, discovered in Pskov, made a sensational find. As the correspondent of "Izvestia", it can actually change the idea of time and the process of the adoption of Christianity in Russia.
Recall that the burial (presumably the tenth century) is located almost in the center of the city. Its almost accidentally revealed at the end of December 2003 during the construction of on-site destined for demolition of the old house.
The deceased was buried at a depth of 4 m, in a sitting position. With careful examination of the burial chamber was found a bronze bowl with a diameter of about 50 cm (standing at the feet of the deceased), a lot of silver and bronze jewelry (bracelets, rings, neck hryvnia), Byzantine gold coins, weights, beads, etc. All of these findings together, according to historians point to the high social status of the deceased (voiced even the version that is the younger sister of Princess Olga, the founder of Pskov). Currently, anthropologists have begun to determine the age of the deceased and reconstruction of its exterior.
However, the other day at the funeral vestments during fluoroscopy was found Christian cross, which could turn the current understanding of the timing of Christianity in Russia. As is known, the official date of baptism is 988. However, the deceased, whose age has not been determined, was baptized, according to the finding, in life. A premise of the cross to the grave indicates the existence of a particular ritual, which is probably not the first time there and had a wide circulation. This is all the more likely because of the historic Western chronicles what the princess herself Olga was baptized between 955 and 959 years, and in the 961-962 year invited to Pskov missionaries from Germany.
However, a senior researcher at the Pskov Museum Elena Yakovleva, commenting on the process of research correspondents PAI, noted that "as grave discovered in the town of Roundabout, which suggests that the Scandinavians in Pskov in the X century lived separate settlement." However, this fact does not indicate the absence of close ties with Rusichi-Pskov, or the differences in religion.
It should however make another reservation. As explained, "News" in the Department of Archaeology of the Pskov museum-reserve "to do rigorous conclusions can be made only after the fact, when will definitely set the age of burial. It is possible that it can be dated to the second half of the tenth century and the first quarter of the eleventh."
