India's first helicopter made its first test flight

First Indian battle helicopter Sunday for the first time off the ground and took off, said the Ministry of Defence of India.

Earlier in the last 3 months of light helicopter (Light Combat Helicopter, LCH) did trial runs on the airfield.

LCH was designed and built by the municipal aircraft manufacturing concern Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the headquarters of which is located in the town of Bangalore.

For the first time on the project of creation of its own light combat helicopters produced in India was announced in 2006. This war machine is designed for close air support of infantry and combat enemy armored vehicles, including in the mountains.

The twin-engine LCH is designed on the basis of a civilian helicopter "Dhruv" which is done serially. Engines "Shakti" ("Power") for LCH developed together by HAL and the European company Turbomeca.

According to the Indian press, helicopter may be ready for adoption at the Indian armed forces in late 2011. It is understood that he will be armed with 20-millimeter cannon, different types of rockets, grenades and bombs.
