In the Atacama Desert Earthquake recorded in 6.1 points Natural Disasters
In northern Chile earthquake of 6.1 points caused panic among the local population. People make purchases and tried to leave as quickly as possible retail space, thinking that an earthquake will be stronger.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which began at 22:23 pm, is located 79 km north-west of Vallenar, Atacama region, 80 km south-west of Copiapo, Atacama, and 234 km north of Coquimbo, Chile. According to the U.S. Geological Service (USGS), the depth of the epicenter was 15.6 km. According to the University of Chile, the force of the earthquake was 5.8 points, the epicenter was 24.4 km depth and is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 30 km from the coast.
It is believed that the epicenter was in a sparsely populated area (USGS), in which there are only a few villages. Huasko settlement, Copiapo and Caldera could feel the shaking ("yellow alert"), usually resulting in economic losses of less than 1% of GDP in Chile, some local damage. To eliminate the effects of such earthquakes enough intervention of local and regional structures.
USGS reports that 331 people would have felt severe shaking level VIII, 925 less severe shaking, 4,000 — even weaker, 207,000 people felt would mean pushing, and another 74,000 — a slight excitement.
