Russian satellite observes fires in Syria

Syria burns. Above it is now clear sky, black smoke rises from the many kilometers altitude, and become visible even from space.

Animation for October 10: 3 mb.

Weather satellite Elektro-L is located in geostationary orbit at an altitude of 36 thousand kilometers and takes the Earth every 30 minutes with a resolution of 1 km per pixel. This allows us to observe the developments in the dynamics. The orange color in the picture — it's green spaces, and they look orange because of the use of light in the chamber satellite near-infrared filter instead of red.

Animation for October 10, reveals several fires in different regions of the country. At first I noticed the black clouds of smoke over Homs. Given the resolution of the satellite, you can imagine the magnitude of the fire. This is from October 9, lit an oil refinery:

All the pillars of smoke, except for one — in Syria. Predominantlyin the countryside. For example, anpanoramio,
managed to find a photo of the village Omar Base Camp:

One would assume that the origin of the smoke has something to do with economic activities, such as refining or agriculture. But, with one exception, the fires are raging exclusively within Syrian borders: to the north-east — with Turkey, south-west — with Lebanon, so the most likely source of — war.

Another noticeable plume over Baghdad. Yesterday it happenedact of terrorism,
but I doubt that the impact of the explosion machine can give so much smoke. Chances are like black carbon can only give a burning oil.
