In a small Ukrainian town of Zhitomir January 12, 1907 according to the new chronology — of a teacher of Russian literature Jakovljevic Paul and his wife, Queen Maria Nikolaevna was a boy. Baptized in his local church and they called Svyatosofievskoy Sergei. In Zhitomir passed the first year and a half life of the Chief Designer.
In the summer of 1908 the family moved to Kiev Korolev, where two years later, his mother and father split up, and a three-year Serge was in the beautiful ancient city in the care of the parents of the mother. Here, in June 1911, sitting on the shoulders of his grandfather, he witnessed the first airplane flight in the beautiful ancient city, managed by the legendary pilot Sergei Utochkina. Half a century later, chief designer said about this fascinating spectacle, addressing the first astronauts.
With the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, a large family of grandparents moved to Kiev, where in the house on the street. Nekrasov and Sergei began to live. In Kiev, his mother remarried, and in 1917, the family of Sergei moved to Odessa, where they found the revolutionary storm, intervention and civil war. After getting acquainted with the pilots of military aircraft at the Base of seaplanes in Grain harbor port of Odessa, Sergei captured the romance of flight. It was here that he made the first flight by seaplane as a passenger. Along with teaching in Odessa stroyprofshkole he joined the Society of Aviation and Aeronautics Ukraine and Crimea, where at 17 years of age creates its first draft of the aircraft — "unpowered aircraft K-5."
In August 1924, Sergei arrives at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in the Department of Aviation Mechanics Department, where in parallel with their studies is active in the glider circle. During his studies in the CPI, he designed several aircraft, and became interested in the principles of jet propulsion and dreams of flying in the stratosphere.
Because of the complicated relationships between parents parted ways, Sergei Korolev, while in Kiev during the periods 1914 — 1917 and the years of 1924 — 1926 years, never saw his father, who since 1908 has continuously resided in Kiev with her mother and two sisters . In 1916, PJ Korolev remarried, and in 1925 in his new family was born the son of Nicholas. Sergei Korolev‘s father died in 1929 at age 52, was buried in Kiev on Lukyanovskom cemetery. Brother Sergei Pavlovich paternal — Nikolai Pavlovich Korolev — in 1941 at age 16, was taken to work in Germany, where he was tragically killed.
In 1926, for further studies Sergei Korolev translated to the third course of the Moscow Higher Technical School — Higher Technical School. By the time he was transferred to Moscow in the service of his stepfather, and then moved and mother.
Since then, Ukraine Sergey Korolyov no longer lived. But this is where he defined the path that was my whole life. His biography was further accurate representation of the Soviet era, in which he has known and the triumphs and tragedies:
— annually from 1927 to 1930, Sergei Korolev participates in All-Union competition glider in the Crimea in gliders of his own design;
— in 1933, 26-year-old Queens led a group of studies of jet propulsion, develops and launches the first Soviet missile on a hybrid fuel GIRD-09;
— in the sinister 38th — arrested on false charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1940-1944 he worked in closed-KB "sharashkas";
— in 1945 — after the early release sent to Germany, where he took part in the study of captured German rocket technology designer Wernher von Braun;
— five years later, in November 1950, gives the Soviet Army first combat long-range missile R-1 and ends the flight tests of the R-2 …
"Pivdenmash" — the first production plant missiles Queen
For mass production of the first Soviet missiles R-1 and R-2 Chief Designer Korolev needed a big factory. A special state commission considered suitable options in the Urals and the Ukraine. The final choice was under construction in Dnepropetrovsk car plant DAZ. And repurpose it in 1951, the year in rocket factory serial number 586, which now bears the name "Southern Machine-Building Plant".
The first principal designer of the plant in Dnepropetrovsk appointed Basil Budnik held missile school at Queen. With him on the plant a large group of specialists from OKB-1 and a pilot plant in Podlipki. Since 1954, after the establishment of the Special Design Bureau of Dnepropetrovsk number 586 (now CB "South"), it was headed by another associate of the Queen — Michael Yangel.
The required rate of production of missiles at the production plant in Dnepropetrovsk dictated international situation escalates with each passing day. The threat of use of nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union could be contained only similar responses.
