? How did the idea of a quantum center?

The fact that the study of quantum technologies at the Kazan University are engaged in a very long time. This research in the field of magnetic resonance, superconductivity, superfluidity, and extensive laser work. All this — quantum technology. Today it is no surprise that there’s superconducting magnets, lasers have and so on, but the mechanisms of their work is unusual for us to understand, and the "results" are very effective. In the last 10-15 years, a lot of talk about the so-called quantum computers and quantum computing is the next breakthrough that is expected from quantum physics.
Why expect it to? Because today computer technology has actually reached the limit of its capacity. Breakthrough qualitative, quantitative may be made only by the revision or implementation, if you want new ideas unusual for us, that gives us, for example, quantum physics. And so today, quantum technologies are interesting "man in the street" in the first place, from the point of view of the emergence of a quantum computer.
? Can I make it?
? In fact, the situation here is this: for the realization of a quantum computer requires first of all the new materials and systems, unusual properties and characteristics are determined by the laws of quantum physics. Qubit quantum? working element of a quantum computer, the memory of a quantum computer, the relevant transmission system. It is obvious that in the process of building a quantum computer will be done and invented many things that will have an independent and significant result. This situation is in some ways very similar to that when the project was designed and implemented by the spacecraft "Buran". While you can often be heard criticisms, they say, why do we need such an expensive project was, in fact once flew, and all! And in fact, it worked out so much technology, so many new things came! I think that in our way will create many new materials.
The need for concentration of efforts in this direction, of course, there was at Kazan University. This is understandable, because there are some very interesting developments in the Institute of Physics, Kazan Physical-Technical Institute. Many results have been obtained in the framework of our cooperation with leading Japanese Riken Institute, with scientists from Germany, France and other countries. The feedback received on our publications, for example, one of the leading experts in the field of quantum technologies, Nobel laureate Wolfgang Ketterle, indicate that we are on the right track. That’s why we decided to create the University of Kazan center of quantum technologies.
? Centre for Quantum Technologies is based on the existing laboratories? Or it will be something distinctive on a new hardware?
? The center is created for the concentration of resources and efforts to resolve certain number of problems, and these problems are very closely related. I would characterize them as follows: the need for new ideas, new materials and new algorithms. All that we have in the University of Kazan, so at the center of quantum technologies today are three laboratories — a laboratory of new materials for quantum technologies, laboratory basic elements of quantum technology and quantum informatics lab. Each of them will solve your problem, but they are closely related to each other. In each of the laboratories will be invited leading experts from partner universities, top universities of the world on a temporary or permanent job. And what is very important — the planned consolidation of young professionals in the science of the University of Kazan.
All of the new laboratory, which we talked about, are based on the existing ones. The modern scientific equipment is so multifunctional that use it to solve only one problem — an inexcusable luxury. Of course, first of all, it is a joint laboratory CFI? Ricken. All of its features will be used. In addition, we are aware of the key risks. We all live in a fast-changing world, the possibility of financial crises, but having such reliable foreign partners and the ability to conduct experiments not only in Kazan, but the partner laboratories, we are confident that the task is completed.
? Who are the partners in this project?
? At the moment there is an agreement with the world’s leading centers in this field. This Ricken, Tiao Chang National Taiwan University, Okinawan Institute of Science and Technology of Japan, the Center for Quantum Optics and Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Solid State Physics, Aalto University of Finland, and we cooperate with Switzerland, France and the United States. Now we are visiting professor Rudolf Grimm at the University of Innsbruck. He was very encouraged by the changes that have occurred recently in the CFI and expressed a strong desire to cooperate with us.
We are now in the stage of negotiations with the Russian Quantum Center (RCC) in Skolkovo for the conclusion of a cooperation agreement. In the same mode, RCC works with individual laboratories Moscow State University and other research centers.
? How do you deal with financing?
— Funding for this center, apparently, will be funded by several sources: this program to improve the competitiveness and development program of the Kazan Federal University. But we are also planning to participate in competitions on federal programs, including target program "Personnel" to obtain additional financing.
? What is the next plan of action?
? At the moment we are becoming a laboratory. We need to configure all of our work, to work out the documentation to invite foreign scientists. This structure is designed to focus on a certain direction and interact with all institutions and organizations in this field. In 2014, together with the Roman Catholic Church are planning to hold an international conference in Kazan. In November of this year will be a school for young scientists of the Russian Federation on computer design of new m
aterials. We are talking about using the unique capabilities of the Kazan University, where we can predict the properties of materials, based on computer simulations. We own a software product company Materialz design, which is not present at a Russian university. That’s why we want to train young scientists in Russia and create R & D-center of this company? in November, is expected to visit the leading specialists of the company to conduct master classes and workshops.

— The first publications we already have this year. After all, I said that the center was not created to "scratch", we have been working in this direction. As for the laboratory equipment with new equipment, it is a long process. I believe that the implementation of the procurement and installation of equipment will take about one and a half years. But the center has already started working, we actively use those new experimental features that we came through the Development Programme CFI.
