The algorithm developed in Novosibirsk State University, will reduce the computation time tsunami 150 times as compared with the systems used in USA, and will quickly and accurately assess the location and the level of destruction, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday, Vice President for Information NSU Mikhail Lavrentiev.

Tsunami wave on the ocean at the speed of a jet plane — about 700-800 kilometers per hour. For example, to Sakhalin from the coast Chile it extends beyond the 22 hours. Specialized program for tsunami hazard calculations used by the National Agency for the atmosphere and the ocean USA, able to calculate the results of the simulation of such a wave, and therefore give a forecast of destruction through eight o’clock. The use of powerful clusters does not significantly speed up the process.

According to the source, the staff Novosibirsk State University were able to reduce the bulk of the necessary calculations in 150 times using Graphics Accelerators.

Lavrentyev explained that on the basis of the algorithm will continue to create ready-made applications and optimize them for a specific computer hardware, which today is used in tsunami warning centers. With these applications, software packages used today in these centers will work faster and more accurately.

"We are ready to offer the developed technology for use in prevention. The work was done with the participation of undergraduate and graduate students NSU by means of the Federal Target Program of Education and Science RF "Scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel of innovative Russia" on 2009 — 2013 years.
