In Mendeleyev University have developed an efficient method of dealing with liver cancer

In MUCTR. DI Mendeleev developed one of the most effective treatments currently inoperable primary and metastatic liver cancer using microspheres of yttrium-aluminosilicate glass. In such radiotherapy microspheres commonly used as a means of transporting the radiation to the internal organs of the body that are affected cancer.

Prior to introduction into the human body microspheres are irradiated in a nuclear reactor by thermal neutrons. As a result of exposure to such glasses Y90 produced short-lived isotope with a half life 64.1 hours, sufficient to complete delivery of the drug to the clinic and treatment. Y90 also has convenient from the point of view of therapeutic applications of nuclear-physical characteristics.

The preparation has been tested on humans. In the near future the Center of optical glass RCTU will land for the production of microspheres with a minimum content of impurities. This will replace imported products, the price of which in some cases reaches 12 thousand dollars per dose, to a cheaper Russian equivalent. Furthermore, compared with similar products imported (in particular, such formulations are made in Canada), domestic microspheres have a higher content of yttrium oxide.

Development of Russian scientists awarded the Grand Prix for best innovative exhibit at the International Forum on Intellectual Property «Expopriority’2011», which was held in Moscow from 7 to 9 December 2011.
