In Russia created a 3D-microscope to study nanotechnology

Russian nanobiotechnology, combining several known methods of microscopy, constructed device that allows to explore the three-dimensional structure of objects at the nanoscale level and their optical properties, its development are described in a paper published in the journal ASC Nano.

According to RIA Novosti, traditionally, for the study of nanostructures using scanning microscopy, where the sample is "groping" a sharp probe. However, this method gives only a two-dimensional image and three-dimensional structure allows to investigate a sample. Previously, Anton Efimov, founder of the resident Skolkovo "Snotra" found a way to work around this limitation by slicing very thin layers of the sample and scanning each separately. Together, the findings provide insight into the structure of three-dimensional object.

Scientists at the nano-bio-engineering laboratory of the National Research Nuclear University "Moscow Engineering Physics Institute" and the company "Snotra", constructed a device that not only cuts the sample, but also conducts spectroscopy layers, allowing you to determine the composition of the sample according to how it reflects or absorbs light.

"We made a device that combines 3D-microscope with nanoscale resolution and microspectroscopy, which gives a qualitative analysis of the sample. Thus, we can very thorough study of bulk nanomaterials, we can tell you how they work, what it consists of and what are their properties" — RIA Novosti said one of the authors of Constantine Mochalov of nano-bio-engineering lab MEPhI.

"Technology in demand for the control of production of nanomaterials, medicine, diagnosis and monitoring of treatment outcomes," — said the head of the laboratory Igor Nabiev. For example, one can examine the living tissue slices and "visible" as the drug molecules are distributed.

While the microscope is in the form of separate devices.
