Turkish newspaper "Hurriyet", resulting in the expression Dervis Eroglu, the president of the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, writes that Israel intends to make its own air force base in Cyprus. No formal agreements and even more so the statements about it not: because plans are carried out in secret.
Eroglu told a news conference: "They hide it. I would not be surprised if Cyprus allow Israel to make the base on its territory. "
Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Netanyahu on February 16 signed an agreement which means that in the event of a natural disaster or a catastrophe on the Cyprus countryside in certain places can be entered the Navy and Air Force units Israel. Army forces in Cyprus, too, will be able to help Israel. Earlier, Israel had signed a similar agreement with Turkey.
Before Netanyahu's visit to Cyprus, the local press reported that Israel intends to ask the Cypriot government permission for the company to base aircraft of the IDF. Israeli aircraft could often patrol the Eastern Mediterranean in order to protect vessels and gas platforms, it would be profitable for Cyprus.
This question was rising in the past, during the meeting of the Minister of Defense Ehud Barak and his Cypriot colleague who visited Israel two months back.
