ISS astronauts are working with plasma crystals

Last weekend at the International Space Station astronauts have launched another series of experiments, "Plasma Crystal".

As part of the "plasma crystal" in microgravity investigated plasma-dust structures.
In plasma, the dust particles are introduced and created the conditions for them to accumulate huge charge, through which dust particles are arranged in crystals. In the absence of gravity multistory obtained crystal, and it all particles visible to the naked eye.
Thus, in the experiment, the theoretical models of solid state physics are verified by direct observation.
Speaking about the program in an interview to "Rossiyskaya Gazeta", the director of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures, Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Vladimir Forts noted that due to the orbital research program scientists were able to obtain new data on the properties of a plasma crystal:
"He is stable in it, as in a conventional crystal sound waves. We measured the coefficients of thermal conductivity and stiffness, found that the crystal melts. Now ISS posted a new system for learning how to plasma crystal affects the magnetic field. In addition, we intend to study the dynamics of the plasma to assess how it spread solitons and shock waves. "
According to the academician, the application of a plasma crystal in the world wide:
"It opens up entirely new possibilities in the field of nanotechnology. In addition, based on it can make a new, compact power supply with a very long life operation. There is a case to him and in a fusion reactor project, which must be periodically cleaned of dust. Another profession crystal — clear from impurities. "
