Kiev airport "Juliani" in the past year in passenger traffic increased 16 times, surpassing airports "Dnipropetrovsk" and "Kharkiv". Over the years it has been served 469.8 thousand, which is the fifth-highest total in the country. This was made possible thanks to the arrival in the "Juliani" low-cost company Wizz Air and several other carriers. However, the development of the airport hampered by lack of a modern terminal, experts say.
International airport "Kiev" (Juliani) in 2011 increased passenger traffic by 16 times — from 29 thousand to 469.8 thousand passengers, said yesterday at a press conference, Deputy Prime Minister of Infrastructure Borys Kolesnikov. Airport was fifth in passenger traffic in the country, ahead of airports "Dnepropetrovsk" (6 th place, 426.3 thousand people) and "Kharkiv" (7 th place, 308.5 thousand people).
Until now, the airport, "Juliani" used primarily for domestic and charter flights. "There have been isolated scheduled flights, which did not give a stable traffic flow," — said the expert of the Center of Political and Economic Analysis Irene Kava. The situation has changed in the past year, after only Ukrainian low-cost company Wizz Air was replaced with a base airport "Borispol" to "Juliani." In addition, the airport served by scheduled, charter and private flights of "Horse" (including in Simferopol), "Motor Sich" (in Kiev and Simferopol), the Greek airline Sky Wings (in Athens) and "Crimean Dawns" (in Simferopol). Now the airport serves about 11 flights a day on arrival and departure.
According to co-chairman of the Supervisory Board, "UTair-Ukraine" Karen Antonova, "Juliani" — a classic airport for the development of regional routes. Cost of services in the "Zhulyanah" on average 20% lower than in the "Boryspil", say market participants. Since February, "UTair" plans to launch "Zhulyanah" its regional program, starting with the flight Kiev-Lvov on ATR 42 aircraft. "In the spring we associate with" Zhulyanah "Krivoy Rog, Lugansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Odessa", — assured Mr. Antonov. "" UTair "will undoubtedly contribute to the growth of passenger traffic at the airport, but small regional carrier aircraft for 44-46 seats — it’s five against one aircraft A-320 to 180 seats with Wizz Air", — says Ms. Cava.
Further development of the airport depends on the construction of the new terminal. The existing terminal building with a capacity of 180 passengers per hour limit future growth of passenger traffic. "For the full development of our program needs a new terminal," — says Karen Antonov. The new passenger terminal with a total area of 14 thousand square meters. m and the value of 175 million USD can be opened in late April and early May 2012, announced in December, the general director of "Jules" Alexander Nesterenko. "The absence of the terminal — the only limiting factor for airlines. This may come foreign carriers, but they need a modern airport terminal," — adds Irina Cava.
