Kola NPP got thousandth ton of non-radioactive melt

On the complex processing of liquid radioactive waste (LRW TC) Kola NPP obtained thousandth of a ton of salt melt — the end product of processing resid.

"For us this is a very important step, which we were 6 years old. We are the first to use this technology for the processing, and the first is never easy. We have to use scientific knowledge and to look for unconventional solutions, — Said the head of the shop on Radioactive Waste Management (Tsoroev) Glory Avezniyazov. — At present, the company management before us the task of further improving the performance of the Complex processing. "

Symbolically, the first ton of melt has been obtained on the Complex and in early August 2006. On the creation of a complex "Rosenergoatom" spent 12 years and more than two billion rubles. In 2008, the draft manual LRW Kola nuclear power plant was awarded the Ministry of Natural Resources for "Best Environmental Project of the Year."

Technology LRW treatment of radionuclides applied to the CP LRW Kola nuclear power plant is unique. It allows you to reduce the amount of radioactive waste to be disposed of more than 50 times.

In addition to the system LRW treatment of radionuclides, the complex also includes a system of cementing spent ion-exchange resins and sludge, as well as a number of auxiliary systems. The project is complex, was developed by the St. Petersburg Institute "AEP" with the participation of specialists nuclear plant, JSC "RAOTECH», AREVA and NUKEM GmbH (Germany).

Commercial operation of the Complex staff conducts workshops on Radioactive Waste Management (Tsoroev) — Checkpoint LRW employs 45 highly skilled professionals. This is mainly young workers, but they are the industry’s first mastered the technology of cleaning bottoms on an industrial scale.

Facility for processing liquid radioactive waste accepted into operation December 30, 2006 after six months of pilot operation.

KP LRW Kola NPP is designed to extract the bottoms of storage tanks and cleaning of the radionuclides, the concentration of radionuclides in the minimum volume and translate them into a solid phase, ensuring the safe storage and disposal. Product processing resid is salt cured product (melting salt), not related to the category of waste. The second area of processing — cementing spent ion-exchange resins and sludges.
