In the Maritime region in the "Novo-Orlovsky" special economic zone of St. Petersburg, laid the first stone of the first factory in the Russian group of companies "Novartis".

The ceremony was attended by the Governor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko, the Minister of Economic Development Elvira Nabiullina, CEO of Novartis International AG Joseph Jimenez.

The project company "Novartis Neva" — one of the most important elements of the formation of pharmaceutical cluster in St. Petersburg. It combines science and production.

"A year ago at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, we signed the first agreements with pharmaceutical companies. And all in 2010 initiated 9 investment projects on construction of new plants. And almost every one of them will be research units to develop new medicines ", — Said Valentina Matvienko.

The total domestic and foreign investment in the pharmaceutical industry Petersburg has already exceeded 25 billion rubles.

In 2010, the production of pharmaceutical products in St. Petersburg increased by 25%. The city government is currently negotiating with a number of pharmaceutical companies, including the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.
"For two or three years, we intend to form a complete powerful pharmaceutical cluster. This is a major contribution to the realization of the state program of Pharma-2020 ", — The governor said.
