Today began the first phase of the work of the new high-tech production of colloidal quantum dots, LLC "STRC" Nanotech-Dubna "" — the project company set up with the financial participation of RUSNANO. The opening ceremony was attended by RUSNANO Managing Director Dmitry Pimkin and General Director of "STRC" Nanotech-Dubna "" Maxim Vakshtein.

The main application of quantum dots — a new generation of phosphors for white-light LEDs. It is also possible to use quantum dots as a fluorescent marker of additives, in particular for the protection of valuable papers and documents from counterfeiting.

"The phosphors based on quantum dots have higher efficacy of radiation and resistant to aggressive environmental factors. In addition, our products are significantly cheaper counterparts manufactured in the U.S. and Europe ", — Said General Director of "STRC" Nanotech-Dubna "" Maxim Vakshtein.

"This project is atypical for RUSNANO — usually the scale of our investment is much larger. But as the market niche of quantum dots is in its infancy and in the world there are only about a dozen manufacturers, we decided to invest in the unique Russian producer to give him a chance to take a leading position in this segment ", — Said RUSNANO Managing Director Dmitry Pimkin.

Quantum dots — semiconductor crystals with a typical size of a few to tens of nanometers.

Nanoparticles in science and technology test center "Nanotech-Dubna" are produced by high-temperature synthesis of colloidal semiconductor materials to create luminescent compounds both in the visible and near infrared region of the spectrum. Most of the elements of the 2nd and 6th groups of the periodic table — cadmium chalcogenides (CdS, CdSe, CdTe), zinc (ZnSe, ZnS, ZnTe), and the 3rd and 5th of the periodic system — phosphides and arsenides indium.

The total project budget is 71.5 million rubles, of which RUSNANO has financed 35 million rubles. Together with RUSNANO, financial co-investor in the project company made FSUE "NIIPA" subordinated to the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control of Russia. Thanks to the commissioning of new capacity, output will increase to 10 kg of quantum dots in a year, and the expected revenue in the next year will be 32 million. In the future it is planned to increase production to 100 kg of quantum dots in a year.

According to experts RUSNANO, the global market for quantum dots in 2008 totaled $ 22 million, and projected to increase in 2015 to $ 250 million.
