New device improves the efficiency of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer

Scientists at Tomsk University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics (TUCSR) created a device for the treatment of cancer by direct current, which helps make radio-and chemotherapy and reduce the severity of its side effects, said on Friday, RIA Novosti Head of the Laboratory of group project-based learning institution, Ph.D. Denis Pahmurin.

"The project team of undergraduate and graduate students of the university under the guidance of university scientists has created a hardware and software system for the implementation of local hyperthermia in the treatment of cancer. Similar to the devices used is harmful to patients and caregivers of microwave radiation (electromagnetic field), we replaced it with a constant current. The essence of the method is that by using our device heats the tumor tissue to 43-45 degrees, which allows you to kill tumor cells or to prepare them for the action of chemo-and radiotherapy ", — Pahmurin said.

He pointed out that the devices with the microwave radiation can not heat the deep-seated tumors, as established in TUSUR setting allows you to focus heat on tumors, wherever it is found.

"It does not damage healthy tissue. Combining the impact of our device with chemo-and radiotherapy, doctors can markedly reduce the dose of chemotherapy and radiation load, which reduces the likelihood and severity of side effects. Effectiveness itself therapy in the course of such combination therapy increases. This has been shown in animal experiments conducted in the laboratory of Institute of Oncology RAMS in Tomsk "said the scientist.

According to him, the project has created TUSUR small innovative enterprise LLC "PROMEL" within the FZ-217. The work was funded by private investors. In 2010, "PROMEL" won the contest of innovation projects of small businesses Tomsk region and received a grant in the amount of 500 thousand rubles.

"Currently, we have applied for certification of the instrument in the form of a declaration of conformity. Our design is unique, both in Russia and in the world. This is confirmed by the fact that we have already received three patents for utility models, patent pending on the invention. Once we get all the permitting documents begin experiments with volunteers at the Research Institute of Oncology. In 2013-2014, we plan to establish manufacturing facilities in the areas of instrument-making enterprises in Tomsk. The approximate cost of the complex — about 1 million rubles, which is one to two orders of cheaper systems available on the market at the moment ", — Pahmurin said.

He noted that the hardware-software system will improve the availability of cancer treatment by reducing the waiting queue and cost of therapy.

Pahmurin said that compared to the bulky counterparts Tomsk device is small and can fit on a bedside table in a hospital room.
