NLMK upgrades steelmaking


On the main production ploschadkeNLMK in Lipetsk begun installation of the main equipment of the reconstructed continuous casting machine number 3 (CCM-3).

The upgrade will increase the production capacity of the unit by more than 300 tons per year to 1 million tonnes per year, the press service of the company.

CCM-3 is designed for the production of a wide assortment of high-quality slabs of various grades of steel for further processing into flat products.
Aggregate productivity growth will be achieved through the introduction of modern equipment, increase the rate of metal casting by 20-25% and increase turnaround time. Product mix capabilities will be enhanced as a result of increasing the maximum slab thickness from 240 to 315 mm. Some of these slabs company will use in further processing, producing a thick sheet at their subsidiaries in Europe (DanSteel, Clabecq).

The reconstruction will be mounted around 3,000 tons of new equipment made NKMZ (Ukraine) and own repair production. Putting the unit into operation is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011, total investment in the project will amount to more than 3.7 billion rubles.

The project is part of the company’s plan to expand steel capacity after start number 7 blast furnace capacity of 3.4 million tons, the construction of which is nearing completion at the site in Lipetsk in the second stage of NLMK’s Technical Upgrade Program.
