— Ilya Nikolayevich, which projects "Saturn" will present at the MAKS-2013?
— We shall now bestseller "Saturn" — a joint project with French company Snecma — SaM146 engine for the "Superjet 100". Serial sample unit for the first time will be presented to the public. Visitors will also see the MAX AL-55, the first in the history of the Russian engine, which was developed under the technical project of India into a training aircraft. Will be shown 36MT engine for cruise missiles. Previously, we did not quite extend to the subject, but now, in general, no secrets. We supply engines for all the cruise missiles, which are manufactured in the Russian Federation, both tactical and strategic. In the next four years will increase their production by 5-6 times. Already this year, we will produce 250 engines, and in the next 500 — two engines per day. Since 2015, within the framework of the federal target program funding for this project will amount to 4.5 billion rubles. VTB Bank loan will help early start production under these facilities.

— It’s amazing, but good.
— Why is that amazing?
— I’m almost 40 years in the aviation industry, and this is the first engine, which immediately began to be operated with an exceptional degree of reliability — 0.98. That’s a lot, even when compared with the beginning of the operation of this engine as CFM56 joint production of Safran and GE. But today it is the most massive engine in the world, which stands on the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 series and is available in a quantity of 1600 per year. It is on this experience, we tried to navigate. I note that at the start of operation of the level of reliability we have been even higher. One of the reasons — our engine is designed in such a way that worthless piece on it just does not get up.
— Absolutely no bounce?

— It was not a 100 percent, but the "exceptional" degree of reliability. Was a failure in Odessa, by the way, about it all at once it became known. But, in fact it was the failure of the auxiliary systems, not the engine, and it had no impact on safety. The pilot made the right decision, planted a car with one engine running. This, incidentally, also talks about how good and safe plane: he sat down on one engine, but none of the passengers did not even notice!
— What are good points about the SaM146?
— The engine is extremely easy to use. No need ladders: Technology opens the hood and conduct routine maintenance. For the first time in domestic practice, it hangs below the wing so low. This was made possible thanks to the fact that the fan impeller is good, "armor", which does not allow the engine to fall into the sand, rocks, even the birds. There have been cases, particularly on landing in Nizhny Novgorod, when each engine fell on two large gulls — and no consequences. But even if the fan blade notch is formed, the damage is eliminated on the spot, there is a cleaning technology. Our drive more economically by 5%, than anything that exists in the world in the class 5-7 tons of thrust. Who is the best engine in the next 5 years, it is unlikely anyone will surpass.

— Today, on each engine, we have a loss of 30 to 40 million, and it’s only natural we are talking about it honestly. If you recall the CFM56, its production reached a zero profitability only in the eighth year of production, or four hundred engine. This is the default value: as a rule, to 400-420 instance production is unprofitable. In general, the major manufacturers are starting to make money from the beginning of active service, scheduled maintenance and the creation of the so-called pool of motor speed (pooled scheme turnover of components allows for a more effective support to aircraft parts — Ed.). We e
xpect that the program will SaM146 margins somewhere in five years.
— Russian-French project for the SaM146 was to help "Saturn" to move to the western standards of performance. How much did it make?
— With great difficulty, but failed. Most importantly — we have ceased to lie. Lie to ourselves, to our partners. The first month was hard, but then it went. First, our engine was a very tough certification of the European Aviation Safety Agency, in charge of all the exploited in the European Union and aircraft engines. This is not only a test of the engine, and it’s tough requirements for the process of its creation, so we had to certify and manufacture. In 2012, such a permit has been obtained. I note that in Russia there are no other such enterprise. We have a certified design office, which can produce motors according to Western standards. We already manufacture parts for the CFM56 on our joint venture "VolgAero." We are in capitalist competition with our French partners. And yet — surprisingly — by the quality of the "Saturn" to come!
— Participates whether NPO "Saturn" in the development of PD-14 to MS-21, which is to compete with the massive western aircraft?

— At first, for a number of subjective reasons, we were cut off from this development. But now the long-standing rivalry between the Permian and the Rybinsk KB takes a back seat: about 1.5 years ago, we have been actively involved in this work. And that is typical for large stretches of the engine, which created the demonstrators today, whether it’s a gas generator or a high-pressure, yet still require further development to meet the requirements of the TOR. The only company that met all the requirements and even exceeded them, it’s "Saturn". Cooperation with Snecma has accustomed us, first of all, focus on the full implementation of the specification. It is absolutely wrong to release a first prototype or something strange. Again, it is believed that it is possible to certify the first engine in Russia and then in the West. We firmly insist that from the very beginning it is necessary to focus on the requirements of the European Aviation Safety Agency.
— Will it be possible in the development of PD-14 to apply technology acquired in collaboration with the French?
— The French have taught the designers of "Saturn" engines designed by modern standards, no one hides. But that does not mean that we have weaknesses specialists. Some of our technical solutions in something even more interesting to the western development. The trouble is that we do not know how to design engines to provide their minimum cost, a specific tool park, a concrete production. We were not able to do and is standard engines. The Soviet Union was a great technique, especially the military, but I assure you, every plane was a bright personality. As I recall, on the 30th plant, which is now called MAPS them.
