Russia has asked France to place the base in Djibouti razvedsamolety

Moscow sought to Paris with a request to allow to place on the French naval base in the African nation of Djibouti, two reconnaissance aircraft IL-38 to fight pirates in the region, said on Wednesday the Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

"We have asked the French side put on an air base in Djibouti two razvedsamoleta to fight pirates in addition to the three French aircraft," — he said.

Thus, Russia wants to increase the total number of razvedsamoletov in the region to five, said the Russian minister.

Serdyukov said Russia believes that an important aspect of co-operation to fight piracy.


"Our ships are working closely to ensure the safety of navigation in the Gulf of Aden," — said Serdyukov.


He stressed that the Defense Ministry is interested in the development of such partnerships in the following areas: exchange of information about the above-water environment in the areas of pirate activity, joint naval exercises in the Horn of Africa, the organization of mutual medical support ships and a joint convoy of civilian courts.


Region Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa is dangerous high activity of Somali pirates who regularly seize court and demand a ransom for their release.

The regular presence of Russian warships in areas characterized by high statistics of pirate attacks, the plan provided for the use of naval forces.


Russian Navy performs the tasks of protecting Russian maritime shipping in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast in October 2008 by convoy to the Russian security corridor. In May 2010, the crew of the large anti-submarine ship "Marshal Shaposhnikov" conducted an unprecedented operation to free from captivity crew of the Russian tanker "Moscow University".


Then this complex operation led by the captain of the first rank Ildar Ahmerov. On board were 23 Russian sailor.


Tanker with 86 thousand tons of oil was coming from the Red Sea to China. At the storming of the ship seamen Russians were not injured, ten pirates were arrested and one was killed.
