Under the plans, the project "Construction of the power bridge Khabarovsk — Sakhalin — Japan" is expected in several stages. In the first phase scheduled for laying submarine cable "Sakhalin — Hokkaido" to pass on it of excess capacity of the Sakhalin energy system, which will appear in the region after the implementation of plans for the development of existing generating capacity. As part of the further stages of considering the construction of export coal generation in the island of Sakhalin, and the grid connection of the island with ECO East for the transfer of energy to Japan from the mainland. At present JSC "RAO Energy System of East" is actively increasing its generating capacity in Sakhalin — in August 2012, the company introduced a 5 unit of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk CHPP-1, is involved in the construction of four power stations.
