Russian boxer Sergei Kovalev on August 17 won the title of world champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in the weight category up to 79.38 lbs. This is
12-round bout with Britain’s Nathan Cleverly was held in Cardiff in Wales. In the third round Kovalev sent two opponents to the canvas, and a fourth-round technical knockout win. The referee stopped the fight, believing that Cleverley could not continue the match.
Thus, Kovalev won the championship belt from its former owner Cleverly.
31-year-old Kovalev scored 23 wins (including 19 knockouts) is not undefeated. In yet another battle was a draw. Of the 20 early 19 victories he won in the first four rounds of the fight.
For Cleverley was the first defeat of his career. In all, he scored 26 wins (including 12 knockouts). WBO championship belt he owned since 2011.
