The domestic segment of the COSPAS-SARSAT system in action

Secretariat of the National Search and Rescue Service of Canada thanked the Russian Federation for the practical use of Russian spacecraft GLONASS-K during a rescue operation.

In March 2012, the National Search and Rescue Service of Canada had an operation to search and rescue in the mountains of western Canada helicopter crew in distress. In this case, information was used from the Russian navigation spacecraft GLONASS-K, which was launched February 26, 2011.

The situation with the rescue of the Canadian helicopter confirmed the practical effectiveness of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for the transfer of emergency distress signals of the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue, COSPAS-SARSAT, and showed the need for further development of the medium-satellite search and rescue system based on the Russian GLONASS.

In the framework of the accepted international obligations of the Russian Federation to participate in the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue, COSPAS-SARSAT system, in accordance with the Federal Space Program of Russia for 2006? 2015, the spacecraft will be used for low, medium and geostationary orbits.
