The head of the teachers’ union in Mexico Elba Esther Kordilo (Elba Esther Gordillo) arrested on Tuesday, February 26, at the airport in a suburb of Mexico City on suspicion of embezzling 2.5 billion pesos (160 million dollars), according Associated Press.

According to police, the funds derived from the accounts of the trade union organization through Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Elba Esther Kordilo spending, among other things to pay for plastic surgeons, acquisition of personal aircraft and real estate in San Diego. Approximately $ 2.7 million from the accounts of the union in 2008-2012 she spent only on payment of purchases in the U.S. department store Neiman Marcus.

Kordilo headed the Union of Workers of Education of Mexico, whose members include about 1.5 million people over the age of 23. For the next six-year term in office she was re-elected in October 2012.

Elba Esther Kordilo, notes AP, long considered one of the most influential "gray cardinal" on the Mexican political scene. According to opponents of Kordilo, she tried to single-handedly manage not only the trade union, which was headed, but of the entire education system in the country. Opponents Kordilo repeatedly accused of embezzlement of public funds, corruption and even involvement in the murders, but police found no grounds to initiate a criminal case against her.

Kordilo has long been a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which was in power in Mexico for several decades. However, in 2006 she was expelled from the party for publicly supporting candidates from other political forces.

Kordilo custody was made shortly after the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto (Enrique Pena Nieto) presented a plan for a major reform of the education system that dramatically reduces the influence of trade unions. Kordilo organized a series of protests across the country against the impending reform
