The number of orphans in Russia for five years, was reduced by 1.7 times

The number of orphans and children left without parental care in Russia reduced every year, said the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Pavel Astakhov.

"Over the past five years, we have every year less and less identified orphans and children left without parental care. In 2008, 124,000 were identified as early as last year they were found — 74.4 thousand," — said at a solemn Astakhov closure of the children‘s home in Dubna.

"One third of all children identified as orphans and children left without parental care, here in Moscow region", — said Astakhov.

He added that 74 of the thousands of orphans in Russia 24.4 thousand were identified last year in Moscow and the Moscow region. Astakhov said that it is not only the budget, but a moral burden on the authorities in the region.

"In this case, the leadership of the region have the courage to tackle this problem. Not just putting together a few orphanages and reporting back that we have cut 4 children at home. Nothing like that. Look at the number of children. They became less — they are today 1.7 thousand in children’s homes left … the rest live in families, "- said Astakhov.
