September 17, 2009 from the Baikonur "cosmodrome" was launched a new generation of spacecraft "Meteor-M» № 1, adopted in December of that year in trial operation.
The main users are RosHydromet, Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry, the Federal Space Agency, the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Forestry Agency, Russian Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, the executive authorities of subjects of the Russian Federation and others space information provided by more than 460 members of local, regional and federal levels.
This spacecraft — the first spacecraft created by FSUE "VNIIEM" space complex (CC) hydro-meteorological and oceanographic support "Meteor-3M", which is designed for space remote sensing information in the interests of operational meteorology, hydrology, agro-meteorology, climate monitoring and environmental including near-Earth space.
The task of equipment "Meteor-M» № 1 includes complex multi-spectral satellite imagery (KMSS), multi-channel low-resolution scanner (MSU-MR), the module temperature and humidity sounding of the atmosphere (MTVZA), board radar system (BRLK) and other devices.
Receiving information to the target hardware "Meteor-M» № 1 carry three centers at the federal level under the jurisdiction of FGBU SIC "Planet": European (Moscow — Dolgoprudnyi — Obninsk), Siberia (Novosibirsk), and Far East (Khabarovsk).

Satellite information is one of the main meteorological support in the Arctic and Antarctic. With these target equipment "Meteor-M» № 1 on a regular basis works on rapid mapping of ice conditions in the domestic and foreign seas of Russia. Pictures taken by satellite, are used in the analysis of ice conditions before the opening of navigation along the Northern Sea Route.
On the basis of data obtained from the "Meteor-M» № 1, professionals built survey and local maps clouds. Global Data MSU-ll allow you to track the path of the typhoon, which are the most dangerous natural phenomena. These are used for typhoons Roshydromet, the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian Transport Ministry to recommend a course of pilotage and timely warning to the population. For forecasting spring floods and floods on the basis of target equipment "Meteor-M» № 1 prepared by satellite images of the degree of destruction of ice cover and river flows. During the period of trial operation of the satellite FGBU SRC "Planeta" prepared to satellite images of the rivers: Labe, Kuban, Kaisa, Ob, Tom, Katun, Angara, Yenisey, Lena (upper), Aldan, Viluy, Amga, Cupid, Irtysh, the Northern Dvina. With the help of satellite data on a regular basis the monitoring of volcanic activity. With the "Meteor-M» № 1 oversaw the spread of dust cloud resulting from the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. Tsvetosintezirovannye plume images, combined with a map of the pressure topography of the AT-500, were transferred to RosHydromet to issue storm warnings for aviation hazards in the zones of airspace.
Survey data from the "Meteor-M» № 1 is also extensively used for the implementation of real-time monitoring of Russian regions covered by forest and peat fires (Moscow, Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir, Sverdlovsk and other areas).
In preparation for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, with the help of satellite observations carried out a comprehensive environmental monitoring of the Sochi National Park and surrounding areas. Survey data "Meteor-M» № 1 are used for weather forecasting on a large area of Sochi, which are transmitted chief meteorologist Olympics — 2014.
At present, the ROC "Meteor — ZM" is working on the creation of "Meteor-M» № 2, planned for launch in 2012.
