The State Duma interested in resuming production of the MiG-31

State Duma of Russia April 11, 2013 at the initiative of the Defense Committee will hold a hearing on "The resumption of production of the MiG-31: Reality and Prospects",

According to the newspaper "Red Star". According to a member of the State Duma Committee on Defense Alexander Tarnaeva, new aircraft are needed for a more complete control of the airspace of Russia, which cover at low altitudes is only one third, and at large — half of the country.

In addition, according to the deputy, in recent years significantly increased military threat from NATO. In particular, it is the approach of military infrastructure closer to Russia‘s borders, creating a missile defense deployment of strategic conventional high-precision weapons and planned "massive militarization of outer space."

According to the defense committee, of an ongoing program of modernization of the fighter-interceptor MiG-31 and MiG-31BM version, will not improve the effectiveness of the cover of the Russian airspace. In addition, deputies believe that the idea of adapting the new Su-35 and T-50 (PAK FA) to perform the role of the MiG-31 is in doubt because the aircraft was originally designed to perform different kinds of tasks.

Technical groundwork for the resumption of production of upgraded versions of the MiG-31 on the territory of Russia exists. In particular, according to the committee, in military units, as well as at the Perm Motor Plant and aircraft repair plant in Gatchina kept about a thousand of the D-30F6 for the MiG-31. These power plants will be enough for the production and upgrading of at least 300 fighter-interceptor with a service resource in 20 years.

In addition, manufacturing companies have kept most of the production capacity, technological infrastructure and documentation necessary to resume assembly of the MiG-31. Finally, the enterprises of the military-industrial complex have prepared several proposals for the modernization of avionics and weapons complex fighter-interceptor.

Before making a decision on the resumption of production of the MiG-31, the committee for the defense intends to evaluate the quantitative need troops in new aircraft of this type, the capacity of enterprises for the production of fighter aircraft and weapons. It is also planned to evaluate the resumption of production funding and time that must be spent on the implementation of this task.

Fighter-interceptor MiG-31 was developed in the USSR in the first half of the 1970s. The plane is capable of speeds of up to three thousand miles per hour, and its combat radius of 720 kilometers. The aircraft is armed with six-barrel gun, 23 millimeter machine gun with 260 rounds, and is equipped with six suspension points for the missiles of "air-to-air" of various types.

The upgraded MiG-31BM can detect targets at ranges of up to 320 kilometers and hit them at a distance of 280 kilometers. The total number of MiG-31 different versions of the Air Force of Russia is about 190 units. A group of four MiG-31, depending on the version can monitor the airspace frontage 900-1200 kilometers. Production of fighter-interceptor was discontinued in 1994.
