TPU students have developed a system that can return people to the memory

Students Tomsk Polytechnic University developed a software system for Total Recall, which helps people with memory loss to restore it without medical intervention by analyzing the behavior of the pupils when viewing a special series of photos. With this project, the team of Tomsk Polytechnic University took second place at the regional stage of the largest international student competition of Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013 in Novosibirsk

In April defend his project team of students WAFT (We Are From TPU) will go to Moscow to the Russian finals.

How to tell the members of the team, they offered quite effective solution to the urgent problem of memory loss. The project «Total Recall» the method of associative thinking, when the memorized information is tied to the existing. This method can not only learn new information, but also refreshing in memory of the old.

The project includes a software implementation of the idea as an application under any of the current platforms. Its advantage is the easy accessibility to the user as to the application, a minimum set of hardware — a computer and a webcam. The app will help restore memory without medical intervention.

The team included students of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Tomsk Polytechnic University Vladimir Osin, Alex Matvienko, Anton Vaytsehovsky, Ruslan Gritsayev. Support for the development of the project Innovation Center provides students with Microsoft (MIC) in the TPU.

Guys at the regional stage of the competition also noted MTS — they have received for their social project consolation prize — smartphones.


The largest international student competition Microsoft Imagine Cup is supported by Microsoft since 2003. Each year, undergraduate and graduate students from around the world present their projects aimed at solving the world’s social problems with the help of modern technology. The contest consists of several stages: regional, national and international.

The number of participating teams in the competition and projects is increasing every year. Imagine Cup 2013 in Russia gathered more than 3,000 applications with project ideas. According to their numbers, our country ranks second in the world, second only to China.

After the Russian final in July 2013 in St. Petersburg the Imagine Cup World Finals in 2013. Finals will be held for the first time in Russia.

In 2013, the prize fund will amount to 340 thousand U.S. dollars.
